H I region: A region consisting
primarily of neutral atomic hydrogen.
The H I spectral line is one of the
most useful tracers of hydrogen gas
in interstellar space. In regions of low
gas density, hydrogen gas exists as
separate atoms and emits a spectral
line with a wavelength of 21
centimeters (radio frequency). Unlike
the H alpha spectral line, which
requires hot gas, H I light comes from
very cool clouds of hydrogen gas in
the spaces between the stars.
