  1. H I region: A region consisting
  2. primarily of neutral atomic hydrogen.
  3. The H I spectral line is one of the
  4. most useful tracers of hydrogen gas
  5. in interstellar space. In regions of low
  6. gas density, hydrogen gas exists as
  7. separate atoms and emits a spectral
  8. line with a wavelength of 21
  9. centimeters (radio frequency). Unlike
  10. the H alpha spectral line, which
  11. requires hot gas, H I light comes from
  12. very cool clouds of hydrogen gas in
  13. the spaces between the stars.
